After the AI Hangover: Your 90-Day BioTech Recovery Plan
By Jenna Levenson, PhD, RN, MS
BioTech’s AI buzz is fading—but now comes the real work. Here is a 90-day action plan to turn hype into operational success.
The AI buzz has worn off. What remains is a sobering realization: while promises were sky-high, actual execution is still murky for most biotech teams.
In “The AI Hangover,” I talked about the fatigue hitting teams after months of inflated expectations and flashy pilots. But we’re not here to bash AI—we’re here to make it work.
Here is what your next 90 days should look like:
Month 1: Audit & Align
Identify every AI tool, automation, or vendor in your stack.
Ask: What problem is this solving today?
Meet with operations, compliance, and clinical leads to ensure alignment with trial priorities.
Tip: Do not let data science teams run AI in a silo. It is imperative to pull clinical, regulatory, and finance into the loop—now.
Month 2: Educate & Pilot with Purpose
Launch internal training on AI literacy for cross-functional teams.
Choose one use case (e.g., protocol optimization or site feasibility) to pilot.
Define measurable success metrics—don’t fall into the “we will know it when we see it” trap.
Tip: If it cannot be validated, explained, or scaled, it’s not ready for prime time.
Month 3: Document & Defend
Document workflows and decisions for every AI-enhanced process.
Prepare for regulatory scrutiny: who reviewed the model, how were deviations handled, how is human oversight built in?
Begin building your AI audit trail—your future FDA reviewers will thank you.
Tip: Treat your AI tools like you treat your lab assays—standardize, validate, and own the results.
What is the bottom line? We do not need more AI promises—we need operational clarity, cross-functional trust, and systems that scale.
If you are in BioTech leadership and you are still unsure how to move from experimentation to execution, Let’s Talk. I have been on the ground floor of clinical trials where AI made or broke timelines—and I know what it takes to get it right.
